Pantone Color of the Year 2014- Radiant Orchid
Introducing Radiant Orchid: PANTONE 2014 Color of the Year-
The Pantone Color Institute™ has taken on the responsibility of designating a color of the year since 2000. They not only pick the color but influence all aspects of design around the world including fashion, interior design, product marketing, and also the art materials industry.
When the color is announce each year, it seems, a trend is born.
This year the color to use is Radiant Orchid. You may see it in accessories such as scarves or purses, or see it as interior accents in the form of pillows, gift ware, bedding, and especially as an interior paint color in the home furnishing industry. You can also see its influence in the grocery store as packaging and product labels will reflect the Pantone color winner. So be on the lookout!
According to Pantone’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman, Radiant Orchid is a perfect choice for these reasons:
” The captivating, magical and enchanting Radiant Orchid. An invitation to innovation, modern and versatile Radiant Orchid encourages creativity and originality. Imbued with a harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and its rosy undertones emanate great joy, love and health.”
Radiant Orchid is born into the Purple family, which itself portrays the feelings of royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition, as well as wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, and dignity. The color “Orchid” has a captivating feeling unique to the family because of the warm, bright, cheerful and happy emotions that resonates from the hue.
The American Journey Orchid pigment is decisively comparable to the 2014 Color of the Year- Radiant Orchid.
Orchid is a luscious and full bodied pigment that projects a vision of beautiful and exotic florals, as well, as a hypnotizing, early morning sunrise that demands your attention and pause . It is easily paired with colors such as American Journey Quinacridone Gold and American Journey Ultramarine to create an exciting triad.
Here, I used these three pigments to experiment with washes and blends to create beautiful grays, and muted colors.

So, where do you think the colors of our lives come from? The paints, the clothing, the packaging, the colors of the year?
They are all present around us all of the time. We may not see them all at once. We may only see them for an instant. But, we see them and we are inspired to imitate them. We create them as pigments in paints or colored pencils or even crayons, so we can preserve what we absorbed as a painting, or drawing, or sketch.
Remember, how excited you were when you first receive that giant box of crayons? The one with the most colors you have ever seen in one place. How exciting it was to be able to create anything you could imagine with all of those colors. Well, it is even more possible to create anything you can imagine with paints, what ever the medium. Mixing and blending and trying different combinations is a complete joy to an artist. Be inspired to color your world with your color of the year. It might not be Radiant Orchid, but none the less it will be a color that influences your mood and personality or maybe just the way you feel for the moment.
